A Dragon Alone

Post by S'haireth on Fri May 27, 2016 2:13 am

S'haireth looked out over the plains he found himself on. He had no idea where this was, most of his life was spent in that accursed prison, and this was nothing like the land he and Sigfried had gallivanted across before he had been locked away. He once again reached out his mind to find his old friend, but felt no response. S'haireth hoped in vain that he was merely too far away, beyond the reach of their bond, but he had no idea how long he had spent away from this land, and with the brief time allotted to humans, he knew how unlikely it was his best friend still lived. He flew higher and higher, trying to find some semblance of a human town. He liked humans, most of them anyway. For such weak, short lived creatures they were capable of so much, their mortality more a motivation for great deeds than an hindrance to them. Some may be wicked, and corrupt, but a great many were perfectly pleasant and respectable. However, he could not find a human city, no matter how high he flew. He saw some sort of settlement, but when he approached it, he found the repugnant stench of Orks. S'haireth did not like Orks in the least. Much too, brutish, although Sig had often told him that since not all humans were bad, not all orks could be bad either. That was Sig, always the idealist, always seeing the good in anyone who had it.

S'haireth decided to fly south. If he did, he was bound to find the sea. The sea was south of everything, and since humans loved building cities on the coast, that it would be a great way to find one. He never understood why humans always liked building things near the sea. It's not like you could drink the water, and most crops don't take well to a sea breeze or salt water. Sig had tried to explain it to him once, but many of the concepts were lost on the dragon. But the fact remained that humans like them, so to the sea he went.

It did not take especially long for S'haireth to find, the sea being a large and rather unmistakable object. However, there was not city here, nor was there one within his view. He Suddenly felt tired after only a few hours of flying. "Strange," he thought, "it must be because I haven't moved my body in so long, it hasn't gotten fully used to the strain of flight." He gently glided down onto a rocky outcropping, and sat there, his thoughts on the whereabouts of his comrades. Would he be able to recognize them, and would they recognize him? Maybe they had forgotten about him. How long had he been gone anyway. With such nagging thoughts, S'haireth bent down , curled his tail around his body, and rested his head on it. He soon fell asleep

This close to an Orkish WAAAAAGH there were bound to be patrols, but thankfully none found him. It sounds like none of the Orks had seen him flying so they weren't hunting him just yet. But as he slept his dreams turned into visions, flashes of memory from something powerful. As if something knew what had him so disturbed and was giving him, at least partially, what he wanted.

He would see flashes of kingdoms rising, kingdoms falling. Flashes of entire areas of land changing from deserts to forests, and plains to thick jungle. He would finally understand, he had been gone for at least a thousand years, but had not been touched by age. His friends were all dead, their dreams crumbled to dust, and forgotten to history.

S'haireth awoke from his fitful sleep, knowing he was truly alone in the world. Without his companions and their mission, he felt lost, without a purpose that had defined him. All his worst fears had come to fruition, and worse still the greatest man he had ever known, who had songs dedicated to his feats in life, was now a forgotten. He took off of the rock on which he perched, flying over the sea. Where he was going, he had no idea, but one thing he knew. He will spread the tales of Sigfried and his companions, and he will cement himself in the history of this world, that no one will forget the name S'haireth for ten-thousand years. And through him, Sig will also be remembered.

After quite a significant period of flight, he would begin seeing lights along the coasts, these were definitely not Orkish settlements he was seeing. He must have finally exited the land the Orks had claimed from the world. He was not seeing lights from large cities connected to power empires, but small coastal towns affiliated with only themselves. Possibly of mixed races, humans, dwarves and elves were most common in these lands, but others would be there if he makes the choice to stop and speak to them, if not the sea is immense, and there are few islands as you fly south, the open ocean is a very dangerous place to fly over. Especially when one has not stretched their wings for at the least a thousand years.

After such a long period of flight, S'haireth had grown weary. He decided to set down in one of the town's hinterlands. He didn't want to approach the town just yet, the small folk usually did not take kindly to large beasts descending on their cities unannounced. Beside that he was tired, and his plan would take up a lot of energy. As he gently glided down, his body began to shift and morph. Focusing his mind, S'haireth felt his tail recede into his body, his wings retract. His long claws became dexterous hands, and his his scaly skin turned smooth. From his head, long wavy blonde hair sprouted, and a thick beard. He examined himself in a nearby pool of water. He nearly cried at the result. He looked exactly as Sigfried had the day before S'haireth had before. They had done this ploy before to lure out would be assassins and, in theory, to maintain moral should Sig fall in battle. As he examined the body he noticed a small problem. He had no clothes. Humans always wore clothes, due to their rather vulnerable bodies. He would have to find some. After that he would begin to forge a new legacy in his friends honor.

It would seem the easiest way to find clothes would be in the village, sadly that would entail walking into a village naked and like he said, small folk where clothes. It would cause quite the stir to see a naked stranger stumble into town. He could see a small campfire near the village but just a ways off from it. It seemed to perhaps be a hunters camp, it would still be an awkward situation but at least fewer people would see his naked form.

S'haireth approached the campfire cautiously, hoping to find some sort of clothing that may have been left around by whomever had lit it. However, much to his dismay, there were none to be found.

There were tents set up around the fire, and it looked like at one point there were clothes out on a line between tents but they had long since been removed from the line. One of the hunters in the tents heard something walking outside and come out with a dagger at the ready, but upon seeing the naked, tired looking man before him, looked more confused than anything else.

"Are you alright? What happened to your clothes?"

S'haireth, greeted this stranger "hail, good sir, I had thought to take a swim, and when I emerged my clothes had been blown away by the wind. Have you any to spare? I'd rather spare myself the embarrassment of having to walk through town with nothing covering me."

The man seemed to chuckle lightly when he said good sir, but he gestured from S'haireth to wait a moment, before giving him some basic green and tan hunters clothing from his tent. "I'm no 'sir' friend. My name is Thomas Caraneer, I'm a caravan merchant, living with some hunters for a while. What's your name stranger?"

Thomas looked to be older than S'haireth's human form by ten years at least. He was grizzled and strong looking, with salt and pepper hair and a beard to match. His form spoke of a life on the road, making his living in the more dangerous wilds of the world.

"I would be known as Sig" the Dragon lied,"I happen to be an adventurer of sorts, traveling the world in search of fortune and glory." He tried his hardest to emulate the real Sigfried's charm, trying his classic disarming smile. He remembered how that smile had even wooed a fae princess into releasing him. What came out, however, was more of a forced grimace.

Thomas saw the grimace and laughed a bit "Not going so well then huh? Well, you've come to the right city to start out with such a quest. You aren't quite in any of main kingdoms yet, but you do happen to be in one of the most famous independent cities in the world. Welcome to Water Crest Port Sig."

The two talked a bit more, and arrangements for clothing were made. S'haireth ended up with a slightly worn wool tunic, and some leather trousers that didn't quite reach his ankles. There were no shoes to be had, but the dragon didn't mind. The idea behind shoes had always escaped him, and since none could be scrounged up, he didn't feel a need to press the issue. The tunic was a bit itchy, and was almost threadbare in some places, but it served his purpose.

When talking more S'haireth would realize this place actually was the perfect place for him. There was an extensive collection of guilds here, offering work for adventurers to build up their name and renown, there was also an huge library dedicated to heroes of old, people who did great deeds in the past. One could also hire their fair share of mercenaries and adventurers here, should one need a party.

As he realized this S'haireth flashed a grin, a genuine smile, unlike the one from earlier. As ever, the name Sigfried carried with it good fortune. This task would be much easier than he had initially thought. Yes this way his friend's name would never again be forgotten, if everything was as easy as this.

Thomas would ask, rather genuinely actually "Would you like me to show you around the city? I assume you haven't been inside of it yet and it can get rather hard to figure out."

He smiled and nodded, getting out of his tent fully now, showing a rather tall man of about 6 fall, with tanned skin from working outside, his salt and pepper hair and beard neatly kept and trimmed even though he was on the road so often. Thomas was obviously a very organized and dedicated man. "Alright, follow me. What exactly are you looking for? A place to stay? A place to get work?"

He nodded "Alright, you'll want the guild halls, come with me then." As he lead him into the city, S'haireth would be assailed by lights and sounds from a million different races and buildings, a million different smells from foods and forges and farms, and everything else around. "What kind of work ya looking for? I mean, if it's just anything in general we could go get you signed in at the Caravaners Guild and you could travel with me."

The Dragon thought it over for a moment. A caravan would allow him to travel and spread Sigfried's name. If he did it would give him a great cover for showing up at distant lands. However, he wasn't sure what a caravaner's job actually entailed, and if it would be conducive to his goals. He asked Thomas about the finer details of caravan work.

"Well, as a new Caravaner you would probably be doing a lot of the loading and unloading of goods when we get to and leave towns and cities. In between stops you would probably be stationed at the front or back of the Caravan as a look out and guard, bandits like to hit caravans outside of the main kingdoms. But, frankly, it's not bad work. Pays fair, gets you traveling, meeting new people, hearing and telling amazing stories, no other work like it in the world."

S'haireth mulled the idea over. To him it seemed almost ideal for what he wanted to accomplish. Flashing a bright smile, he said " well, that sounds like a grand idea! Let's go to the guild."

Thomas clapped a hand on S'haireth's shoulder and smiled "Alright Sig! It's just over this way, by the end of the night you'll be an official member of my caravan!" He chuckled and smirked "Lucky you."

When they got to the large guild hall, which was made to resemble a caravan wagon. Once inside Thomas walked over to the main desk and after speaking for a few minutes came over with a sheet of paper. "This is a basic contract, saying you will work in my caravan for a year, we can renew it then if you want."
